“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences.”
A Microsoft representative provided this statement to IGN.com, confirming reports from earlier today that Scalebound, a console exclusive for Xbox One, has been cancelled.
There are a few deeply concerning realizations regarding this announcement:
A title of great significance for the 2017 Xbox lineup is now gone, and one of the only first-party single-player focused games as well.
Platinum Games, a studio that has recently pushed out mediocre releases such as Star Fox Zero and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan must be facing internal turmoil.
The launch lineup and selection of titles for Microsoft’s Project Scorpio console is now in much greater focus, for all the wrong reasons.
At this point, the industry and gamers at large will be searching for answers as to what went wrong and how the situation could have been different, only to find Public Relations statements.
Regardless, when there is less competition in the market, the consumer loses. So even though I had no interest in Scalebound, the industry is worse without its continued development.
